If there is a place in the world that is most demanding of air quality, it must be a hospital.

SARS first appeared in Shunde City, China, in November 2002. SARS stands for the severe acute respiratory syndrome. The primary mode of transmission is through respiratory droplets or contact with respiratory secretions. Patients typically develop pneumonia-like symptoms, classifying SARs under atypical pneumonia. This disease spreads through different means like tourism and commerce, later migrating to Hong Kong. It was then spread from Hong Kong to Vietnam, Singapore, Taiwan, and Toronto, Canada. In the first few months of 2003, SARS has declared an epidemic in Hong Kong. The virus spread rapidly in this densely populated city. As of May 2003, there were 1755 confirmed cases and 298 deaths, with the highest number of deaths worldwide. Dr. William Ho, the chief executive of the Hong Kong hospital authority, was infected with the virus and was admitted to the hospital. Thick masks and frequent use of disinfectants were unable to slow the spread of this epidemic.


On March 27th, 2003, the Hong Kong government announced that citizens were prohibited from visiting SARS patients. Individuals in close contact with SARS patients were required to report to the designated health clinic departments. All entry control stations began implementing quarantine declaration measures along with the closure of primary and secondary schools. On April 30th, the Ministry of Health stated that central air conditioning is strictly prohibited in all hospitals to prevent the spreading of pathogens through central air-conditioning.

Out of the 40 hospitals in Hong Kong, Tuen Mun Hospital received the highest number of SARS patients. Surprisingly, the rate of cross-infection is the lowest here amongst all hospitals. A few years before the SARS epidemic, Tuen Mun Hospital detected odors indoors. The hospital installed a suspended NCCO air treatment system developed by researchers in the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. The system quickly eliminated the odor and volatile organic compounds (TVOC).

The NCCO air purification system, intended to protect the employees' health, has taken a significant effect in the control of SARS.


NCCO reaction layer can instantly capture pollution gases and convert them into harmless gases. Formaldehyde and various types of odor can be efficiently decomposed under nano environments, killing 99% of all harmful bacteria in the air. The decomposition efficiency of ammonia and other toxic gases reaches 92%. 99.03% of all volatile organic compounds were eliminated. The harmful gas is decomposed into carbon dioxide and water, with a medical-grade purification effect. During the treatment, no toxic substances and ozone residue remains. There is no remission into the air and no need to replace the filter core. The air purification system at this level is the core of the SARS virus prevention. A safe breathing environment is one of the keys to prevent the spread of the virus.

At the end of June 2003, the SARS virus was finally under control in Hong Kong. More than one thousand people have recovered from the illness, with a substantial contribution from Tuen Mun Hospital.


Within the next few years, hospitals such as the Ruttonjee Hospital, Yan Chai Hospital, United Christian Hospital, Hong Kong Baptist Hospital, and Hong Kong Sanatorium & Hospital have started working with RHT Hong Kong.
